Surgery update:

Sky just came back from surgery.  It went ok.  When they opened him up the spleen was attached to his abdomen so it was harder than they thought to get it out.  He bled ALOT!!  His blood pressure dropped but they were able to transfuse him with four units of blood pretty fast so they were able to stabilize him ok.  They said the spleen was huge and very abnormal and it looked engulfed with fungus.  He is back in his room right now.  He was awake when they brought him back and looked like he was in alot of pain so they gave him some more sedation.  He is sleeping right now.  He still has a drain in his belly to drain extra blood, and also an IV that goes right into his belly that drips narcotics into him to help with pain from the inside.

Thank you so much for all your prayers!!!!  It went alot better than I thought, and hopefully he can start to get better from here on out.

I've been thinking about you guys all morning - so glad to see an update!

We're so glad to hear things went alright. And that that nasty spleen is out of there now! I hope that helps things a ton.

You guys are amazing!

I just found Skyler's story and have been reading back through your history. Bless your sweet heart. Nothing is as difficult as seeing your child in pain. Our baby was in the NICU for 10 weeks after he was born and then had open heart surgery at 5 months old. There is just nothing that can ever prepare you for seeing your child hurt, and just wanting to do everything in your power to make them feel better.

I think you are so amazing, and although I feel like I have a little insight into how you feel, I still don't know how you do it! We will pray for Skler and keep him in our thoughts. What a beautiful little boy who just shines with goodness through his eyes!

You and Skyler are such an amazing duo. (Amy Fairbanks from the ALL-KIDS group on ACOR.org told us about Skyler.)

Our granddaughter Elizabeth was diagnosed with ALL when she was 23 months old - she's survived fungus, 28 months of chemo and then relapse in CNS and bone marrow, followed by more chemo, radiation and a bone marrow transplant. She turned 9 in September and is 3 and a half years post BMT.
The fungal infections are so hard - we were lucky in that Elizabeth's was on her elbow and didn't get into her blood but it still required 6 months of surgeries and antifungals. Skyler has not had such good luck - hoping that he licks all of this and can move to being a regular "cancer kid".

You are an amazing mom and I hope that you and super Skyler can escape from the hospital soon!

Prayers and hugs from Texas,

Thank you so much for the update. for taking the time to let us all know when your mind is somewhere else I am sure. I know for all of us we appreciate you taking your time to update us. We all love you and Skyler! More prayers..When Amelia first started her fight almost 1 yr ago, one of their friends from either Germany or Austarllia sent them an email that said "prayers coming thick and fast" from all over the world, and I believe that is true for Skyler today.

I read through your blog today and I just want to send big hugs your way. You guys have had a rough road. I have a four year old with ALL and I belong to the ALL List Serve some of the others have mentioned. My little man will turn four in January and was diagnosed at age two. He is in Maintenance right now, but I remember those rough days in the beginning of treatment. I am praying like crazy for you guys and I hope that getting that spleen out will help with that fight against the fungus. Sending much love and prayers...
